Workshop on Exploring 4 and 8 Shaft Twills,
with Janet Phillips
Twills are the most logical of all classic weave structures.
They create diagonal and zig zag lines and diamond patterns.
An in depth and expert tutorial by Janet Phillips
an experienced weaver, author and tutor who taught us how to understand,
design and experiment with 4 and 8 shaft twills over the six week course.
First on paper and then by weaving multiple sectioned sample blankets to explore
the different threadings and lifting sequences. The following results form an extensive
library from which to draw for our own unique creativity and inspiration.

"I do not expect anyone to start weaving until two or three weeks into the course" said Janet.
Working through paper exercises will develop your understanding of construction and design possibilities.

An example showing repeating hopsack for 4 shafts by Pat Griffiths, Ceredigion, Wales
Although encouraged to use paper and pencil, Janet mentioned computer programs
that could help and for those wanting to find inspiration for additional designs there were several
links in her notes that could lead to hundreds more.
Twills start from bottom left moving diagonally to top right, but then of course they can be reversed...

After two weeks of theory sampling, we dressed our looms with different threadings
and outlined them with coloured borders.

Janet, thank you so much for sharing your expertise. An inspiring workshop with copious notes and interesting on-line discussions.
